Chopin - Etude in G-flat Major, op. 10 n° 5

“Rocky beat” by Alfred Cortot (measures 1-2, 5-6, 9-10 etc...)

This pedaling appears only in the edition by Alfred Cortot. It adds an accent on the weak beat of the measure, which greatly distorts the character of this Etude. It gives it a “disco” or “rocky” rhythm. Was this truly Chopin’s intention? In any case, the result is not pretty…
