8. Why two videos per lesson?
Because each lesson takes place in two stages:
In the first stage, the student sends me a score with his fingering and a video recording of the chosen piece (or an excerpt). In this initial phase, that is to say correcting errors of a more general nature, the quality of this video (generally a wide shot) does not play an important role - you can make it with a cell phone, a Webcam, camera, etc. In response, I send the student my opinions and instructions about the text. Also, and depending on the needs of the student, I can send him scores of small exercises and eventually a short video.
In the second stage, to attain a maximum of precision and efficiency, the student will send me his/her questions regarding the achievement of my instructions. This stage is extremely important, because doing so will allow me to verify if the student's work will progress in the right direction, to see if my advice is been correctly applied.
Moreover, regularly recording and listening one's playing is a very important practice tool, because it allows the students to:
● Hear his playing with the ear of a potential listener;
● Evaluate objectively and globally the reality of his own interpretation itself and not only his interior impression “how I feel myself when I play the piece and am trying to get around the difficult technical parts”;
● Compare, if necessary, the latest recording of the piece with former ones. Thus he can clearly attest to his own progress or - on the contrary - hear that certain modifications were not completely positive or desired.
